In honour of World Trail Mix Day I tried my hand at making my own versions! I'm hesitant to say it but I think trail mix may just be the ultimate snack. It's quick, it's easy, it can be prepared in advance, you can tailor it to your tastes but most of all.. it's bloody delish! Snacks can be sourced from your place of choice, whether its a natural market like Source Foods or a health food shop or just your good old grocery store. And it promotes portion control so you aren't eating too much; balance is key! I chose to do this by using sweet little mason jars, but you could use containers, ziploc bags, etc. The best trail mixes are based around 4 snacks, one from each of the following categories; - sweet; 🍫🥥 - crunchy; 🍿🥨 - fruit or berries; 🍒🍌 - nuts or seeds; 🥜🌰 but can totally be mixed & matched to your preferences and tastes. I've created 6 different mixes below & they're all a hit! Birdseed: This healthy, crunchy option is made with; - pumpkin seeds (pepitas) - sunflower seeds - dried cranberries - cashews Tropical: Feeling a little fruity? This mix has got you covered with; - dried pineapple chunks - coconut flakes - dried banana chips - macadamia nuts Wake & Snack: Sometimes breakfast doesn't quite cut it and you need a little something extra to keep you going. The Wake & Snack includes all your fave breakfast items; - chocolate covered coffee beans - walnuts - sultanas - cereal (i chose all bran but cheerios etc. work well too) Apricot & White Choc: For those with a sweet tooth, you can't go wrong with a little white chocolate! - dried apricots - walnuts - almonds - white chocolate drops Protein Packed: Are you more of a savoury person? Or like to have bulk protein in our snacks? Not to worry, this one is perfect for you; - pretzels - beef jerky - almonds - peanuts Movie Mix: For something a little more naughty but also portion controlled and better than an entire bucket of buttered, salty popcorn from the concession stand, why not take a little snack pack with you & include your faves; - fresh popcorn - sultanas - peanuts - m&m's Feel free to mix & match to your hearts content, but be warned you need to have an iron will when creating these babies to stop you from eating your body weight in snacks during the prep.
